Monitoring with AI to protect the environment and life.
Sara Moraca, sustainability expert of SIDI, interviewed staff members of Studiomapp, a company that deals with location intelligence. The company elaborates very accurate integrated data analysis of the territory starting from geo-localized data. But, what most characterizes Studiomapp is the enormous application of artificial intelligence to monitoring satellite images of environment.
World awards.
An activity so remarkable to award Studiomapp of important acknowledgment from international institutions. NATO, Pentagon, and even an invitation to the United Nations Summit. For four years, NATO has been organizing a challenge on innovation in the field of defense. In 2019 the Agency was looking for innovative technologies in the field of maritime ecosystem monitoring. Studiomapp was awarded for a solution for the analysis of maritime traffic. This one uses artificial intelligence applied to very high resolution satellite images to cross-checking with AIS, the automatic tracking identification system used in the naval sector.
Accuracy of analysis in the service of the Pentagon.
Last year the Pentagon started a competition that involved the analysis of a data set. Released by the US Department of Defense innovation, the analysis tagged various areas of the world to prove algorithms about various types of natural and artificial environments with a large number of variables. Geographical, related to the construction materials for the houses and the composition of the land.
“Last year we contributed with our artificial intelligence models, together with the other contest winners, to speed up the mapping operations of areas in need of relief after natural disasters by 300%, in a challenge promoted by the Department of Defense of the States United”.
Leonardo Alberto Dal Zovo, co-founder and technical director of Studiomapp
“The open data set provided by the Pentagon made it possible to carry out a quality training of the algorithm which, during the analysis phase, proved to be very accurate and very fast”
Angela Corbari, co-founder and chief operating officer
Previously, these detection operations were mostly done manually; climate change and the growth of extreme phenomena, both in terms of frequency and intensity, made it necessary to change the operational approach of analyzing the affected areas. Artificial intelligence is perfect for working on large amounts of data where classification is required.
“Making computer vision in images that portray the faces of animals or people is quite simple, because the subject is very large and in evidence. The same cannot be said for an aggregation of 5-6 pixels in a satellite image which can be a house or a car and also contain a million (or more) objects in a single scene “

An Italian excellence.
Studiomapp on 26 September 2019 was the only Italian startup among the protagonists of the United Nations General Assembly on Climate. It was invited to participate because it carries out projects that contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.
Some of the data collected by Studiomapp regarding three sustainability objectives contributed to the report “Digital with purpouse: Delivering a SMARTer2030”. Presented on Thursday 26 September in New York, it was produced by Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), an international organization which brings together about 40 of the most important telecommunications companies in the world to promote the environmental and social sustainability of new technologies and Deloitte, a leading company in business consulting.
“Europe has two constellations of SATELLITES . Copernicus for Earth observation and Galileo for global positioning. these are advanced technologies that will play an increasingly important role in monitoring our planet in a sustainable way. Specifically, the Copernicus program provides researchers and companies with completely free and open data. They are excellences that we must continue to support financially, since the value they generate is much higher than the investment made”
